Search continues for woman swept into stream in storm-hit Catalonia

A woman is missing after falling into a swollen stream in Cabrera de Mar, in Catalonia’s Maresme area, during torrential rain on Saturday.

She fell in alongside her daughter, and the girl’s father jumped into the water and rescued her.

Six fire service teams, police and sea rescue crews are searching for the woman.

Heavy rain also led to flooding and other emergencies in Catalonia, including two older people being rescued from a car in Sentmenat and disruption to commuter trains.

More than 100 litres of rain fell in an hour in El Ejido, in Almería province, where flooding led officials to suspend municipal activities and warn people to avoid travel.

Red rain alerts are forecast for Valencia and Alicante on Sunday, as the storm continues across Spain.

The day has been hard. As far as I remember, this has never happened in the region. It is a tragic night and we hope it will have a good outcome.
