Indonesia Says Nearly 3,500 Specialists Joined Trans Patriot in Two Years

Indonesia’s Transmigration Ministry says it has sent nearly 3,500 specialists to transmigration areas through the Trans Patriot program in the past two years.

The program sends researchers and young professionals to share knowledge and skills with communities in remote areas.

The ministry says education is central to developing these areas and has worked with universities in Indonesia and abroad.

Assignments currently last four months, but the minister said limited funding has prevented the ministry from carrying out an earlier plan for year-long placements.

He said China has sent university professors to rural areas for as long as a year, a model Indonesian students in Beijing praised.

The ministry plans to make placements longer so remote communities have better access to science and technology.

The ministry also runs four other programs focused on land issues, local participation, industry and jobs, and cooperation among government, businesses, universities and communities.
