SK On research team wins award for lower-cost battery process
SK On held its second annual research conference at its Future Technology Institute in Daejeon, South Korea.
More than 300 projects were submitted, about 15% more than last year, across six battery research fields.
The top award went to a team working on LFP batteries, which use lithium iron phosphate in their cathodes.
The team developed a process that replaces costly carbon nanotube paste with powder, spreading it evenly through the cathode material.
The process aims to lower costs while maintaining similar performance to the existing method.
SK On will consider using the process in production and plans to make the conference a regular event to encourage research and collaboration.
An SK On research team won the top award at the company’s second Future Technology Institute academic conference.
The team developed a process that replaces costly carbon nanotube (CNT) paste with CNT powder for making lithium iron phosphate battery cathodes.
The process was judged to improve cost competitiveness while delivering performance on par with the existing process.
The conference was held on October 14 and 15 at SK On’s Future Technology Institute in Daejeon.
SK On said it plans to consider applying the technology in actual production.
