Italy to cross-check vehicle records to find uninsured cars
Italy’s new budget measure requires regular checks for uninsured vehicles.
The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and the Automobile Club of Italy, known as ACI, must compare records at least every three months.
The checks will combine insurance data with vehicle, inspection, registration and scrapped-vehicle records, including information on some foreign-registered vehicles in Italy.
Vehicles with no recorded valid cover or exemption can be flagged so their insurance status can be brought into compliance.
The information can also go to road police to help them check vehicles and establish violations.
A ministerial decree must set out how the databases will connect and how data will be handled within 90 days of the measure taking effect.
The plan is intended to strengthen enforcement of Italy’s compulsory vehicle insurance requirement, using existing public resources.
