OpenAI launches GPT-6.1 Terra, a faster, lower-cost AI model
OpenAI has launched GPT-6.1 Terra, a model designed to handle computer-based work.
It can interpret what is on screen and interact with desktop apps to do tasks such as filling out forms, editing videos and reading technical drawings.
Terra sits between OpenAI’s lower-cost Luna model and the more capable Sol and Astra models.
OpenAI says Terra matches Astra on one benchmark at one-tenth the price per token, while its API costs half as much as GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
The company also says Terra completes tasks more than three times faster than Astra and Sol, and makes fewer errors than its predecessor.
The model is available to eligible ChatGPT Work and Codex users, and developers can access it through OpenAI’s API; OpenAI still recommends Sol or Astra for its most complex coding tasks.
OpenAI has launched GPT-6.1 Terra, a model designed for computer-based work, visual reasoning, coding and everyday tasks.
The company says Terra completes tasks more than three times faster than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
OpenAI says its API pricing is 50% lower than GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol, with performance matching GPT-6 Astra on one benchmark at about one-tenth the price per token.
On an internal benchmark, Terra’s error rate at low reasoning effort fell to 16.7%, from 53.6% for GPT-5.6 Terra.
OpenAI says the model is available to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users through ChatGPT Work and Codex, and to developers through its API.
