MSCI freezes some changes to its indexes for Turkish stocks

MSCI has temporarily frozen some changes to its indexes for Turkish stocks, effective immediately and lasting until further notice.

The decision involves Turkey’s stock market and follows investor concerns about possible coordinated trading through funds linked to some small publicly listed companies.

MSCI says such trading could make it harder to verify how many shares are genuinely available for public trading, a figure used in index calculations.

The freeze blocks increases in certain foreign-investor and share-count factors, additions to the MSCI Turkey Investable Market Index, and moves to higher company-size groups.

Turkey’s market has not been downgraded, and trading on the Istanbul stock exchange has not been stopped.

MSCI says Turkish authorities have taken initial steps, but it wants better ownership disclosures and effective, lasting oversight and penalties; it will keep monitoring the market.

If it sees too little progress by June 2027, MSCI may consider a consultation on moving Turkey from emerging-market status to frontier- or standalone-market status, with a review planned for its 2027 annual classification assessment.
