Ebola outbreak in Congo exceeds 10,000 cases and 4,600 deaths

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has passed 10,000 cases, with more than 4,600 deaths reported.

The outbreak began in May and has spread beyond the DRC, with cases reported in Kenya and Nigeria.

Uganda declared its outbreak over in July, and the World Health Organization confirmed this in August.

The outbreak is harder to track than expected because it affects conflict-hit North Kivu and areas that are difficult for medical teams to reach.

Ebola spreads through contact with bodily fluids, and the sources say about half of infected adults die; one account says the death rate among children can reach 80%.

There is no effective vaccine for the strain circulating in the DRC, and children are not included in current vaccination campaigns or research, according to Médecins Sans Frontières.

A vaccine test using a formula developed for another Ebola strain is underway, while researchers are preparing two other vaccine trials.

The outbreak continues to spread, but case figures remain uncertain because access to affected areas is limited.
