Helicopter and ground teams fight fire at Way Kambas park

A forest and land fire has burned at Way Kambas National Park in Lampung province, Indonesia, since September 22.

The disaster agency, park staff, military, police and other teams are working to put it out.

About 40 hectares remained unextinguished as of October 25, based on field estimates.

A helicopter has carried out water drops, while ground crews are using hoses, drones and other equipment to reach the fire.

Dense, dry vegetation, strong winds, difficult access and peat soil make the work harder; peat fires can smoulder underground and flare up again.

Roughly 350 personnel are involved, and rain-making flights produced light rain in the park area and Lampung Barat district.

Teams will focus next on priority fire points and peatland, while monitoring the spread and deciding where to direct firefighting efforts.

From the air, I saw several fire points that need attention, and we have arranged ground teams for Way Kambas by operational area to make firefighting more effective.
