Passenger dies after truck overturns in Lagos

A goods truck overturned in Gbagada, Lagos, on Sunday while travelling toward Oshodi.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority said a front tyre burst as the truck was moving at high speed, and the driver lost control.

An elderly passenger in the front cabin was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene after hitting his head on a sharp object.

Rescue workers and police attended, but the truck could not be removed immediately because its goods had to be transferred first.

The crash comes amid a wider road safety problem: LASTMA said 69 people died and 246 were injured in road crashes across Lagos from January to March 2026.

The agency urged heavy-vehicle operators to keep to speed limits and check for faults, saying excessive speed makes it harder to control a vehicle when a mechanical problem occurs.
