Heart and blood vessel diseases lead causes of death in Russia
Russia’s leading cause of death is cardiovascular disease, Health Minister Mikhail Murashko said at a session on thrombosis.
He said these diseases remain the top cause in the country’s overall death figures.
Murashko said Russian medicine should treat acute heart problems while continuing to address cardiovascular disease more broadly.
Flu and respiratory infections can raise heart risks, he said, especially for people with coronary heart disease.
Murashko said flu can increase the risk of acute complications in those patients by more than six times.
Vaccination can help prevent these complications, according to the minister.
He also said vascular centres in Russia treat heart attacks, strokes and blood clots in peripheral vessels.
Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko said cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in Russia.
He made the statement at a session titled “Thrombosis: Modern Challenges. Russia–Africa Dialogue.”
