Mexico’s first agrovoltaic system begins operating in Puebla
Mexico’s first agrovoltaic system has begun operating in Tianguismanalco, in the state of Puebla.
It combines solar power with farming, using 200 panels to power irrigation wells without taking extra land or affecting crops.
The 126-kilowatt system was developed through a partnership involving the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics, local irrigation users and government agencies.
It could supply 65% of the irrigation system’s annual electricity use and save about 130,000 pesos a year.
The savings may help farmers maintain irrigation networks and buy equipment.
The project directly serves about 30 farmers, whose work supports around 150 families growing flowers, vegetables and fruit on 55 to 60 hectares.
Officials will assess whether the model can be replicated in other farming communities.
Mexico’s first agrovoltaic system has begun operating in Tianguismanalco, Puebla.
The 126-kilowatt system uses 200 bifacial solar panels to power irrigation wells.
It is expected to cover 65% of the irrigation system’s annual electricity use and save about 130,000 pesos a year.
The 4.11 million-peso project was developed through a collaboration involving Inaoe, a local irrigation association and government agencies.
It is intended to reduce farmers’ electricity costs without using extra land or affecting crops.
