South Korea launches daily farm weather hazard alerts through mobile app

South Korea’s Agriculture Ministry has launched daily farm weather alerts through its Agriculture e-ji mobile app.

The service is available to registered farms growing 44 types of crops, including fruit, vegetables and grains.

The ministry and the Rural Development Administration linked the app to an early-warning system in February last year.

Before the launch, farmers had to visit the app’s website to check farm-specific forecasts and hazard predictions.

Now, push alerts arrive automatically each morning with local forecasts and predictions for 15 types of agricultural weather hazard.

On ordinary days, they give the day’s weather and a three-day forecast; when a hazard is expected, they include crop-specific guidance on how to respond.

Farmers can use the warnings to prepare for risks such as frost, heat, strong winds, flooding and drought.
