Uruguay resumes Brazilian poultry imports but keeps ban on Santa Catarina
Uruguay resumed poultry imports from most of Brazil on Friday, ending a nationwide restriction but keeping a ban on products from Santa Catarina.
The restriction followed a Newcastle disease outbreak in Santa Catarina, including a case identified in Nova Itaberaba.
Uruguay accepted that the health risk could be limited to the affected area, rather than treating all Brazilian poultry products as restricted.
The nationwide restriction lasted 19 days before Uruguay narrowed it to Santa Catarina.
Eleven countries still restrict poultry products from the state, and those measures together affect an estimated 15,000 tonnes of Brazilian exports a month, about 3% of the country's average monthly poultry exports.
Brazil is seeking to limit the remaining bans to the affected area, while the agriculture ministry says officially inspected poultry products remain safe to eat.
