Six Brazilian party foundations propose changes to monetary policy
Six foundations linked to left-wing parties proposed changes to Brazil’s economic policy in a document published before the presidential election’s second round.
The groups include the foundation of the Workers’ Party, or PT, and five other party foundations.
They want more voices from production, labor and development ministries on the National Monetary Council, which currently includes the finance and planning ministers and the central bank president.
They also propose giving the central bank goals beyond price stability, including smoothing economic activity and supporting full employment.
The bank’s independence was set by law in 2021, and the proposal would make inflation targets less absolute and link monetary policy more closely with other policies.
The foundations say their document is not a replacement for the Lula-Alckmin ticket’s platform, but is intended to guide public policy in the next government.
