Ostapenko Saves Three Match Points to Beat Pegula in Wuhan

Jelena Ostapenko beat Jessica Pegula in the Wuhan Open second round, winning 2-6, 7-6(7), 6-3.

She saved three match points in the second-set tiebreak after twice coming back from a break down.

Pegula was the second seed, and the win was Ostapenko’s first over a top-10 player since March.

Ostapenko played through arm pain, wearing heavy tape and saying she took a painkiller during the match.

In the other half of the draw, Iga Swiatek beat Magdalena Frech 6-2, 6-1 in her opening match.

The win was Swiatek’s 40th of the season and moved her to seventh on the all-time list for victories at WTA 1000 events, with 149.
