Saudi Arabia sets fines for price and consumer rule violations

Saudi Arabia’s Commerce Ministry has set fines for business violations covered by its rules.

Businesses that charge more than the official price for essential goods face fines of 5,000 to 100,000 riyals per item, based on the price difference.

Using a “no returns or exchanges” notice can cost up to 1,000 riyals.

Other violations include failing to display prices, refusing to sell or issue receipts, and charging more than the advertised price.

Fines also cover failures to provide or accept electronic payments, as well as misleading product information and certain food-waste practices.

Some businesses get time to correct violations after being notified, and fines can be doubled for repeat offences.

The penalties apply within the ministry’s area of responsibility, alongside the rules and powers of other authorities.
