Kenyan pharmacists warn against vaginal use of allergy tablets

In Kenya, pharmacists are warning against a trend on TikTok that tells women to insert cetirizine tablets for vaginal tightening.

Cetirizine is an allergy medicine meant to be swallowed, and the tablets have not been tested for vaginal use.

The Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya says dryness does not strengthen vaginal muscles and may instead cause discomfort or tissue injury.

The trend has been linked to increased demand, higher prices and possible shortages at some pharmacies, which could make it harder for people with allergies to get the medicine.

The society says anyone who has tried it should stop and seek medical advice if they have pain, bleeding, burning, itching, unusual discharge or fever.

Kenya's health ministry has raised concern, and a senior official suggested tracking medicine distribution and purchases to help identify misuse.

No formal decision on that proposal has been announced.
