Gunpo residents call for relocation of major logistics terminal
A citizens’ committee is launching in Gunpo to press for the relocation of a major logistics terminal.
The terminal was built in the early 1990s, but housing developments have since grown around it.
The city says about 27,000 vehicles use the site each day, including around 3,000 medium and heavy trucks, adding to traffic, noise and dust.
It estimates the terminal causes more than 85 billion won in yearly social and economic costs, while bringing in 4 billion to 5 billion won in local tax revenue.
The city wants the operator’s contracts to end and a replacement site secured before 2042, when the second area’s contract expires.
The operator says shared roads, power and gates make separate operation impossible, and wants to modernize and extend the facility’s use.
South Korea’s transport ministry plans to announce options next month, including relocation, after completing a review.
A residents’ group is launching a campaign to move Gunpo’s major logistics terminal, citing traffic, noise and dust affecting nearby communities.
The group plans to hold a rally and march near the terminal on Nov. 9.
Gunpo city also supports relocation and wants an alternative site secured before the terminal’s second section’s use contract expires in 2042.
The terminal operator opposes separating or relocating the facility and proposes modernizing it and extending its use.
South Korea’s transport ministry is expected to announce options for the terminal’s future next month.

As residents have endured harm to their daily lives for decades, there must be a roadmap for complete relocation and securing an alternative site, not an extension of operations.
