A 25-year-old in Spain finds job security in public service

María del Carmen, 25, secured a public administrative job in Pontevedra, Spain after passing an entrance exam on her first attempt.

The exam offered 120 places, and she ranked 99th.

She said the result gave her a sense of security at a young age in a country where unstable work and high housing costs weigh on many young people.

She values the stability of the job more than its relatively modest pay.

Sharing household costs with her partner gives her a steady financial footing each month.

She plans to continue studying art history and may take further exams to improve her position in public service.

Her job also leaves room to prepare for future exams while she continues her studies.

There were 120 positions and I came 99th. I had a huge cry, out of excitement, thinking, ‘I did it.’ I felt very fortunate to be so young and already have my life sorted out, so to speak.

What I wanted was to pass the exam as soon as possible and, above all, have a cushion in case I wanted to prepare for another exam.
