Sagal Abdi-Wali wins Holborn and St Pancras by-election for Labour

Sagal Abdi-Wali has won the by-election for Holborn and St Pancras in north London, taking the seat previously held by Keir Starmer.

The Labour candidate received 45% of the vote, with the Green Party finishing second.

Abdi-Wali, 43, came to Britain from Somalia with her family when she was seven and has lived in the area since the 1990s.

Before becoming an MP, she served as Camden council leader and worked in local politics and community groups.

She said her election was deeply personal and hoped people who looked like her would see themselves represented in Parliament.

She named housing, homelessness, public ownership of Thames Water, and jobs and apprenticeships for young people as priorities.

She now takes up the role of MP for the constituency.
