IDF says airstrike killed Hamas commander who attacked Re’im base

The IDF says an airstrike killed Hamas commander Maher Walid Omar al-Husseini in southern Gaza on Wednesday.

The military identified him as the commander of a cell in Hamas’s Nukhba Force, its military wing.

It says he took part in the October 7, 2023 attack on Re’im base, where four Israeli soldiers were killed and seven wounded.

The IDF also said he had recently been advancing attacks on Israeli troops and civilians and trying to rebuild Hamas’s capabilities.

The military described those activities as a violation of the ceasefire, though it did not provide further details about the alleged plans.

The strike fits a broader campaign against Hamas operatives in Gaza, which the IDF says includes people it considers a threat to Israeli forces; no next step was specified.
