Tanker carrying 15 Indian crew members struck in Strait of Hormuz

A projectile struck the oil tanker MT ST 3 in the Strait of Hormuz on Friday, India’s ports minister said.

All 15 Indian crew members were safe and uninjured, the minister said.

The incident follows other vessel attacks in the waterway, including a container ship that caught fire and sank on Thursday; its 21 crew members were evacuated safely.

The attacks have occurred amid the US-Iran war, which has increased risks to commercial shipping.

The strait is a vital route for global energy supplies, and the attacks have contributed to crude oil prices rising above $100 a barrel in the US.

India is monitoring the situation and staying in contact with ship managers to help protect its crew members.

Earlier today, the Mission coordinated rescue of five Indian nationals on board the Kuwait-flagged tanker MT Kazimah III, struck by a projectile in the Strait of Hormuz. All 5 Indian nationals have been shifted ashore safely. We thank the Omani authorities for their continued support and assistance.
