UN warns Israeli expansion in Gaza is driving repeated Palestinian displacement
The UN human rights office says Israeli forces’ westward expansion in Gaza is displacing more Palestinians and raising concerns of ethnic cleansing.
Over the past two weeks, the office documented new displacement in Shujayea, Gaza City, and parts of central Gaza.
The military deployment boundary, known as the Yellow Line, is moving west, and the UN says forces are treating it as a “kill zone” that blocks people from returning home.
The office says Israeli forces are also destroying remaining civilian infrastructure and attacking places where displaced people are sheltering.
In Shujayea, a fire after a reported drone strike on a tent displaced 200 families, or 800 people, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Public Works and Housing.
The UN says many people displaced before the ceasefire have little chance of returning because their former areas are beyond the line or inaccessible.
Attacks have continued despite the ceasefire: Gaza’s Ministry of Health says 1,574 people have been killed and 5,687 wounded since it began on October 11, 2025.

What people are saying
The nightmare of displacement in Gaza is both acute and chronic.
Those displaced before the announcement of a ceasefire have little to no prospect of return to the areas they fled, most of which are inaccessible because they fall beyond the so-called Yellow Line. And they continue to be displaced again and again.
