Minister checks three fishing village projects in Indonesia’s Jember
Indonesia’s fisheries minister, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, visited three fishing village projects in Jember, East Java, to check their progress.
The projects are part of the third phase of the Kampung Nelayan Merah Putih program, planned for 2026.
Trenggono said the work should do more than build infrastructure; it should meet fishers’ needs and help improve fishing productivity and livelihoods.
Fishers’ feedback is meant to guide the facilities, with operational support planned in stages.
Local fisher Muhammad said people currently travel about two to three kilometres to get ice, and hopes the projects will make ice and fishing equipment easier to obtain.
Ice, cold storage and boat repair facilities are among the needs fishers have raised, including to help keep their catch fresh.
The projects are still being built, and Trenggono called on village leaders and others to help ensure the facilities are used effectively.

What people are saying
I want to know exactly whether the program we have prepared, the fishing village development called Merah Putih, is truly targeted at the right people.
We are thinking about how to make sure these fishers really move up a level. We will improve conditions for our fishers, they will go to sea, and we will gradually support all their needs.
With KNMP, it will be easier for the community to get what we need, such as ice and fishing equipment.
