Japan to urge households to prepare for disasters with supplies

Japan’s disaster minister, Goshi Hosono, plans to urge households nationwide to prepare for disasters on November 2.

The call will also ask central government ministries and prefectures to strengthen their preparations.

People are being advised to keep at least three days of food, water and emergency toilet supplies, and ideally enough for a week.

The timing coincides with the launch of Japan’s new Disaster Management Agency, and the government says the call is part of promoting disaster readiness.

Japan faces risks including major earthquakes, typhoons and heavy rain, and essential services can take more than a week to recover after a large disaster.

Past disasters have also shown that emergency supplies may not arrive quickly enough for everyone who needs them.

The announcement does not indicate an imminent war or cyberattack, and the one-week stockpile advice was already part of government guidance.

Households can build supplies gradually by buying a little extra of what they normally use and replacing items as they consume them.

At a minimum, three days; ideally, I would say one week. Please make sure you have food, toilets and water at home so you can manage even without public assistance.
