Eight-year-old girl remains in intensive care after jaguar attack in Pará

An eight-year-old girl was seriously injured in a jaguar attack in the Munduruku Indigenous Territory in Pará, Brazil.

The attack happened on Saturday near the villages of Cajual and Patati, in the municipality of Jacareacanga.

She was with her grandparents and had walked toward a stream when the animal attacked her, according to local residents.

She remains in intensive care at a hospital in Itaituba, with her most serious injuries to her head.

Indigenous health teams took her by boat and then by plane to reach hospital care.

A biologist said she had survived and was showing signs of responding to treatment, but there is no official detail on her prognosis or possible lasting effects.

Community accounts say the jaguar was captured and killed after the attack.
