Turkey says 1,545 suspects jailed in Istanbul crime operations

Turkey's interior minister said Istanbul carried out 190 operations against new-generation crime groups in 2026.

He said 2,067 suspects were caught and 1,545 jailed in those operations.

The figures were discussed at a security meeting at Istanbul Police Headquarters, attended by city and police officials and operational unit chiefs.

Çiftçi also said shootings at homes and businesses fell 49% in Istanbul compared with last year.

He said 93.5% of the shootings were solved, though he did not give the number of cases.

Officials reviewed the groups' structures and activities, and discussed new projects and operational strategies to restrict their ability to operate.

Çiftçi said the aim is to dismantle not only the groups' members but also the structures that support them, and that the campaign will continue.
