Indonesia Targets Completion of Flores North Coast Road by 2028

Indonesia’s Public Works Ministry aims to finish the Flores North Coast Road by the end of 2028.

The 472.48-kilometre route runs from Labuan Bajo in West Manggarai to Maumere in Sikka, on Flores island.

About 385 kilometres are paved, while 87.41 kilometres remain unpaved.

The ministry also plans to widen paved sections, with a target width of 6 to 7 metres, because narrow roads can make it harder for large vehicles to pass safely.

Work is planned on unpaved sections, but 33.12 kilometres run through forest and require approval for use of the land.

The ministry says it will coordinate with the Forestry Ministry to speed up that approval and continue work in stages through 2028.

The improved route is expected to help travel and deliveries and provide better access to economic centres and tourist areas on Flores.

From this morning until this afternoon, I went to Labuan Bajo, then travelled around from Bajo to Maumere to follow up on the President’s direction regarding completion of the North Flores Road.
