Three men die in manure pit accident at farm in Navarra
Three men died at a pig farm in Pitillas, Navarra, on Wednesday after becoming trapped in a pit used to store animal waste.
The victims were the farm’s 61-year-old owner, his 37-year-old nephew and a 33-year-old worker, all linked to nearby towns.
Police say one man may have fallen into the pit, while the other two entered to help him.
Manure pits can be deadly because waste can produce gases and reduce oxygen in poorly ventilated spaces.
The three men died of asphyxiation, and emergency crews could not save them.
The deaths bring the number of people killed while working in Navarra this year to 16, according to the Comisiones Obreras union.
The Foral Police are investigating the accident.
