White House reportedly ordered Starlink restrictions for Ukraine’s military

An order to restrict Starlink for Ukraine’s military reportedly came from within the White House, according to Reuters, citing US and Western officials.

The restrictions took effect on October 14 and limited connected equipment to speeds of 100 miles per hour.

The limits disrupted Ukrainian drone operations, including strikes and efforts to intercept Russian attack drones.

Ukraine relies on Starlink, a satellite internet service run by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, for military communications and drone control.

Musk said the US military and ultimately the president decide limits on Starshield, Starlink’s military service, while a senior US official denied that President Donald Trump requested the restrictions.

Service was later restored, but reports differed on how fully it was working, with Ukraine’s Defense Ministry saying it was operational and a drone industry source describing patchy performance.

Who ordered the restrictions has not been publicly confirmed, as tensions between Kyiv and Washington continue over Ukraine’s attacks on Russian oil refineries.
