Morena leaders back Ariadna Montiel after cartel allegations

Morena’s 17 state coordinators backed party leader Ariadna Montiel after Chihuahua Governor Maru Campos accused her of links to organized crime.

Montiel rejected the claims and called for evidence, saying Campos should take any proof of a crime to the authorities.

President Claudia Sheinbaum said Campos had raised the allegation in a conversation with her on September 17 and had not presented evidence.

Sheinbaum also defended Montiel, who previously served as welfare secretary in her government and in that of former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Montiel accused Campos of allowing CIA agents to operate in Chihuahua without federal permission, while Campos blamed her former state prosecutor for their presence.

Mexico’s attorney general’s office said Campos had blamed the former prosecutor, and that he would face accusations of treason and other crimes; the sources do not say what happens next in the case.
