Two Belarusians held over alleged sabotage plan in Bavaria

German prosecutors are investigating two Belarusian men accused of planning a paid arson attack near Nuremberg in Bavaria.

The men, aged 39 and 50, have been held in pre-trial detention since 7 October.

Prosecutors say the target was an unidentified building or facility considered critical infrastructure, and the planned fire was meant to cause significant damage and threaten Germany's security.

One account identifies a railway line and power transmission route as possible targets, but the authorities have not specified the target.

Romanian authorities are also investigating the men over a fire at an industrial park in Brașov on the night of 14 September, where a defence company has production facilities.

Romanian officials reportedly suspect the men were linked to a Russian-directed espionage and sabotage network, but the men are presumed innocent.

The men remain in German custody while Romania seeks their extradition, and the investigations are continuing.
