Man arrested in Bari over alleged attempt to set ex-wife on fire

A man was arrested in Bari over alleged family abuse and attempted femicide after an incident involving his ex-wife.

On October 9, he allegedly went to her workplace in central Bari, Italy, poured alcohol on her and tried to set her on fire.

During a struggle, the lighter fell, and the woman picked it up and set fire to herself; her sister put out the flames with water.

She was not reported to have suffered serious injuries.

Police say workplace video and the woman’s complaint helped reconstruct what happened, including allegations of physical and psychological abuse over several years, sometimes in front of their two young children.

A judge ordered the man’s pre-trial detention, which police carried out on October 16.

The case remains under preliminary investigation, and the arrest order does not establish guilt; the man can present a defence and seek a review.

The measure is based on a judgment of mere probability, that is, on serious indications of guilt, and does not constitute a determination of responsibility.
