India aims to cap national debt at 50% of GDP by 2030

India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reaffirmed the Centre’s debt-reduction goal while speaking to reporters in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu.

The government aims to cap national debt at 50% of GDP by 2030 and says its annual budgets show a commitment to reducing the fiscal deficit.

GDP is the total value of goods and services produced in a country, so the target compares government debt with the size of India’s economy.

Sitharaman said international organisations had recognised India’s approach to debt management, while noting that many countries faced debt challenges after the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Centre is also trying to control inflation through supply-chain measures, including rice export restrictions, which it says help protect consumers while ensuring farmers receive minimum support prices.

Global shocks such as wars and higher crude oil prices have added pressure, and Sitharaman said the government would continue efforts to limit their impact on the public.
