Argentina and IMF reach deal that could unlock $900 million
Argentina and the International Monetary Fund reached a technical agreement that could give the country access to about $900 million.
The deal follows months of discussions between the government and the fund.
The money is not yet approved: the IMF said remaining steps must be completed before the review goes to its executive board, expected in early December.
The IMF did not specify what those steps are.
Argentina’s net international reserves exceeded the programme’s end-of-June target, helped by central bank purchases of foreign currency, and the Treasury and central bank took steps to strengthen external financing and extend debt maturities.
The agreement is part of efforts to rebuild reserves and reduce financing risks, while the IMF also said Argentina had made significant progress restoring economic stability.
The board review is the next stated step before the potential funds can be released.
The IMF and Argentina reached a staff-level agreement on the third review of the country’s US$20-billion loan programme.
The agreement could unlock US$900 million for the government of President Javier Milei, subject to approval by the IMF executive board.
