Monterrey hosts Latin America’s first global bioeconomy summit

Tecnológico de Monterrey is hosting the first Global Bioeconomy Alliance Conference in Latin America at its Monterrey campus.

The sixth edition of the conference has brought together nearly 200 in-person participants, including representatives of 26 universities and research centres from 16 countries, government officials and nine industrial partners.

They are discussing how to turn biological resources and biomass into useful products as part of a more circular and lower-carbon economy.

Bioeconomy approaches treat organic and industrial waste as potential inputs rather than simply rubbish.

The conference aims to include Latin American countries as partners in designing solutions, not just as suppliers of raw materials or recipients of technology.

That matters because the region produces food for global markets and includes rural communities that depend on and help care for biodiversity and soil.

The conference’s discussions also stress that the transition should bring fair benefits to both rural communities and high-consumption economies.
