Hurricane Simon moves north off Mexico’s Pacific coast

Hurricane Simon, a Category 4 storm, is moving north-northwest parallel to Mexico’s Pacific coast and has not made landfall.

Mexico’s National Water Commission placed its center about 70 kilometres west of Playa Pérula and 90 kilometres south of Cabo Corrientes, in Jalisco.

The storm was moving at 9 kilometres per hour, with sustained winds of 215 kilometres per hour and stronger gusts.

It is bringing extraordinary rain to parts of Jalisco, torrential rain to Colima, and heavy rain to areas of Nayarit and Michoacán.

The forecast also calls for very heavy rain in southern Sinaloa and waves as high as 8 to 10 metres off Jalisco.

Authorities have expanded a hurricane-wind watch from El Roblito in Nayarit to Bahía Tempehuaya in Sinaloa, while a hurricane-wind warning remains in effect from Punta San Telmo in Michoacán to El Roblito.

People in affected areas have been urged to take precautions and stay in safe places.
