CJ CheilJedang expands discounted low-protein rice for adults with rare diseases
CJ CheilJedang is supplying low-protein rice to adults in South Korea with congenital metabolic disorders, including phenylketonuria.
These conditions can require a carefully restricted diet, and the rice has about one-tenth the protein of ordinary rice.
In June, the company agreed with South Korea’s disease control agency and a rare disease association to support purchases of the special food.
Since July, patients aged 19 and older have been able to order it in advance each quarter for 1,700 won per pack, with up to 1,248 packs available per year.
The agency estimates the support could save each patient 8.48 million to 14.1 million won annually.
CJ CheilJedang has produced the rice since developing it in 2009 and adjusted its production line to increase supplies; it says it plans to broaden cooperation to supply patients overseas as well.
