Swimmer found unharmed after major search in Berlin’s Spree

A report of a person in trouble in the Spree triggered a major search near Berlin’s Elsenbrücke on Friday.

Firefighters, police and the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund joined the operation in the Friedrichshain area.

About 50 emergency workers searched, using a boat, while a rescue helicopter circled overhead.

The search caused serious traffic delays around the bridge and Stralauer Allee.

Police eventually found the swimmer about a kilometre from the bridge and brought them ashore with help from the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund.

The person was uninjured and had apparently gone swimming.

Their identity and gender were not made public, and no further action was reported.
