Wang Yi Calls for Reform of Global Governance at Xiong’an Forum

At the global governance forum in Xiong’an, China, Foreign Minister Wang Yi delivered a letter from President Xi Jinping and gave the keynote address.

Wang said China’s global governance initiative, proposed a year earlier, responds to gaps in international cooperation and calls for a fairer system.

He urged countries to strengthen the United Nations, support open trade and give developing countries more influence in international affairs.

He also called for shared rules on artificial intelligence and other emerging areas, including outer space and the deep sea.

China outlined eight planned steps, including supporting UN reform, hosting this year’s APEC leaders’ meeting and backing Xiamen’s bid to host the secretariat of a marine biodiversity agreement.

Wang said China would also establish a global governance research centre and publish work on space governance and artificial intelligence cooperation.
