Spain sets ordinary retirement age at 65 or 67 from 2027
Spain will have two ordinary retirement ages from 2027: 65 or 67, depending on a person’s years of contributions.
People who have contributed for at least 38 years and six months can retire at 65.
Those who have contributed for less will generally have to wait until age 67.
The change completes a gradual rise in the retirement age that began under a 2013 reform.
The age rule is separate from the time needed to receive the full calculation base: from 2027, that requires 37 years of contributions.
A new pension calculation method will also be phased in alongside the existing one, with the more favourable method used during the transition.
Other changes will affect contribution payments, including a higher charge intended to support the public pension system.
From January 1, 2027, Spain’s ordinary retirement age will be 65 for people with at least 38 years and six months of contributions, and 67 for those below that threshold.
The change ends the transition period that began in 2013 to gradually raise the ordinary retirement age.
The age threshold depends on years contributed, not a person’s date of birth.
The 100% rate of the regulatory pension base will require 37 years of contributions from 2027.
Other pension and contribution rules will also change in 2027.
