New Jersey governor warns ports against importing Russian diesel
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill warned port operators not to accept Russian diesel in a letter sent on Nov.
2.
She says importing the fuel violates federal law and warned that companies could face penalties worth millions of dollars.
The warning comes after President Donald Trump said Russia had agreed to supply diesel to the United States and global markets.
A 2022 law restricts Russian oil imports, and Sherrill says Trump cannot waive the sanctions unless he certifies that Russian forces have withdrawn from Ukraine.
A tanker carrying 40,000 tonnes of Russian diesel was reported heading to New York, bringing the dispute into focus for companies that own import facilities.
Sherrill says New Jersey will use legal and regulatory tools to stop the imports, while port operators face a choice between her warning and accepting the fuel.
