Lavrov to attend G20 foreign ministers meeting in Atlanta

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will lead Russia’s delegation at a G20 foreign ministers meeting in Atlanta on October 30–31.

The visit comes despite U.S. sanctions on Lavrov, imposed after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Moscow says it will use the meeting to promote ideas for a “multipolar world,” meaning an international order with power shared among several countries.

The trip comes as Washington and Moscow show signs of warmer ties, including preparations for Ukraine-Russia-U.S.

talks in Abu Dhabi in November.

A separate G20 summit for national leaders is due in Miami in December, and President Vladimir Putin has been invited, though the Kremlin has not confirmed he will attend.

Lavrov’s visit is expected to go ahead after Russian officials said travel arrangements were resolved shortly before departure.
