Spanish banks turn to smaller acquisitions as major deals stall

Spanish banks are shifting toward smaller acquisitions as major deals stall and large takeover opportunities remain scarce.

The activity is focused on Spain’s insurance brokers, private banking and consumer credit businesses.

Banks including ING and other investors have acquired a stake in Singular Bank, while Unicaja is negotiating to buy consumer lender Wizink.

ING is also examining Cetelem, which BNP Paribas has put up for sale, but no deal has been confirmed.

Banks want scale to fund technology and regulation costs that smaller firms can struggle to manage alone.

The deals also reflect interest in specialist products and European banks’ efforts to expand in Spain.

ING’s review of Cetelem could conclude before the end of the year, according to the source.
