Former Spanish employment minister Fátima Báñez dies

Fátima Báñez, a former Spanish employment minister, has died.

She took the job in 2011 under Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, when Spain’s unemployment rate was close to 23% and the country was heading into another recession.

Unemployment later reached 26% as the economic crisis deepened.

As minister, she oversaw labor and pension reforms that drew protests and several general strikes.

She kept channels open with trade unions despite disagreements over her policies.

After Rajoy lost a no-confidence vote, Báñez left politics and later joined the CEOE Foundation.

Her time in office left a mark on Spain’s employment and social policies.
