MEC-marked van transported students after Lula campaign video
A van marked with Brazil’s Education Ministry logo picked up students from President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s campaign office in Brasília on Tuesday.
The students had taken part in a campaign video in which Lula promised a new university scholarship program called Pé de Meia Universitário.
Lula said students would receive 700 reais a month for 10 months and a further 2,500 reais at the end of each year.
His campaign said a private company had been hired to transport the students and the van was not in ministry service at the time.
The Education Ministry said the matter was not connected to it.
The pledge came 12 days before the presidential runoff, scheduled for October 25, in which Lula is seeking to overcome a lead held by his opponent, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro.
The campaign did not say when the proposed program would begin.
