IndyCar to race in Barcelona in 2027 as Alonso urges caution on expansion

IndyCar will hold a race at Barcelona’s Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in 2027, returning to Europe for the first time since 2007.

The race is scheduled for July 18, and the series has agreed a multiyear deal with the circuit.

Five-time champion Alex Palou will race near his hometown in Spain, where he grew up and has a large fan base.

IndyCar has not raced outside North America since an event in Brazil in 2013.

Fernando Alonso welcomed the Barcelona event and said the permanent circuit is important for Spanish motorsport and driver development.

But he cautioned IndyCar against expanding too widely, noting that international travel can raise costs and saying the series should keep most races in the US.

IndyCar says it will announce the full 2027 schedule shortly; details such as the race length and any track changes have not been decided.
