Spain’s Treasury plan envisages selling nearly 20,000 state properties by 2030

Spain’s Treasury launched a plan in 2023 to sell state properties and raise money from assets the administration does not need.

The plan runs to 2030 and envisages selling nearly 20,000 properties, mostly rural land.

It says sales should be timed for when the property market is most favourable, while ruling out speculative considerations.

The plan has been carried out gradually; in 2024, 60 auctions offered 1,210 properties.

The plan sits uneasily with the government’s current criticism of high housing costs and making business from homes.

Treasury says it is now directing its work toward public policies, especially housing, and a proposed decree could allow state properties to be transferred for housing.
