Cyberattacks disrupt French supermarket freezers and Dutch-Belgian retail operations

Two separate cyber incidents have disrupted food retailers in Europe.

In France, attackers remotely took control of refrigeration systems at hundreds of stores, causing fridges and freezers to warm and food to spoil.

Affected retailers included Intermarché, Netto, Super U, Marché U and Leclerc, with Carrefour Market and Monoprix also reported affected.

In the Netherlands and Belgium, Ahold Delhaize said it was dealing with a security issue and took some systems offline to help protect its network.

Disruption affected Albert Heijn distribution centers, stores and the websites and apps of Dutch brands, as well as Belgian Delhaize stores.

Researchers had previously found security flaws in some refrigeration controllers, but it is not known whether attackers used them in France.

Ahold Delhaize said its teams were assessing and mitigating the issue, and that its stores remained open.
