New rules allow more people to catch invasive crayfish in the Netherlands

Invasive crayfish are damaging water plants, wildlife and riverbanks in the Netherlands.

Water authorities do not have enough workers to reduce their numbers, so new rules will let them hire hobby fishers and other groups to catch the animals.

The crayfish cannot be fully eradicated, but officials hope to control the problem.

Caught crayfish must be destroyed or eaten, not released elsewhere.
